Salary and Career Outlook

Medical assistants are in high demand and will be for at least the next ten years (bls.gov). Unlike other medical professions, becoming a medical assistant has a relatively short training period. Depending on which school you attend, medical assistant programs can be completed in less than a year.

According to the most recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015, the average national annual medical assistant salary was $31,910.

Because this is a median average, a percentage of people earned less than this, as well as more than this. The lowest ten percent of the population earned $22,040 or less, while the highest ten percent earned $43,880. Comparatively, the salary of medical assistants is similar to paramedics, but on the low end when measured up against other health care professionals. These wages are determined largely by location, as some larger cities and private practices have higher salaries.

According to US News, salaries are expected to increase over the next few years as trends have shown gains in median salary. By location, the highest-paid positions are in the California metropolitan areas of San Jose, Santa Rosa and San Francisco.

Many employers offer insurance and other benefits. Advancements in this profession can earn you up to $40,000 annually with just an associate’s degree and certification

Medical Assistant Career Trends

If you’re looking at starting a career as a medical assistant, it is important to consider future job outlooks and trends. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for medical assistants are expected to grow much faster than other occupations from 2010 to 2020. This is largely due to the aging baby-boomer population and the need for more and more healthcare workers.  As the baby-boomer population gets older, healthcare practices across the country are expected to expand to deal with the added workload. As a result, physicians will likely employ medical assistants to help keep costs down in place of more expensive healthcare professionals.

In fact, it is because they are less expensive than traditional nursing support staff that many practices are shifting their hiring towards medical assistants. Instead of using expensive staff like nurses in administrative roles, physicians use medical assistants to take on those responsibilities, regulating nurses to more specialized responsibilities, and work that requires a more advanced skillset.

Since medical assistants are flexible in the roles they can fill, they are able to handle duties like dealing with insurance forms, creating electronic health care records and patient records, as well as clinical duties like assisting in patient examinations, giving injections, and preparing blood for laboratory tests. Dealing with electronic health records are a particularly important skill for aspiring medical assistants hoping to do well in their careers. As more and more healthcare providers convert their patient records to digital formats, being knowledgeable in programs utilizing electronic health records is becoming an increasingly applicable skill.

As of 2015, there were an estimated 601,240 medical assistants employed in the United States–up from 527,600 in 2010. By the year 2020, that number is expected to increase to 690,400 with a growth rate of 31 percent.
